McDonald's Netherlands Removes Artificial Intelligence Christmas Ad In the Wake of Public Outcry.
The global fast-food chain has pulled a holiday advertisement created using Artificial Intelligence after facing widespread criticism on social media.
The brief ad was created using generative AI clips and was originally published online for the Dutch branch of McDonald's back on 6 December.
Viewer Response and Decision to Pull
Soon after it aired, viewers on social media denounced the employment of AI in the advert. A number of called it "uncanny" and "poorly edited".
"This moment represents an valuable lesson as we investigate the appropriate utilization of generative technology," commented a spokesperson from McDonald's Netherlands.
The advert was developed for McDonald's by Dutch agency TBWA\Neboko and US firm The Sweetshop. It portrayed a series of scenarios that might go awry during the Christmas break, with the theme "the most terrible time of the year".
A Growing Movement of AI-Generated Ads
Commercials that incorporate generative AI have emerged as a rising phenomenon among major companies, notably for the Christmas campaign season.
- Coca-Cola has recently released back-to-back AI-created holiday ads.
- Technical Challenges: Since segments produced using current AI video tools are susceptible to degrade the more extended they are, the majority of AI video outputs tend to be roughly six to 10 seconds in length.
- Industry Concerns: The ad also raised concerns about job displacement in the creative sector, with some critics noting it could reduce opportunities for actors.
Response from the Production Company
Following the ad being taken down, a producer's chief executive, Melanie Bridge, spoke in support of the project.
According to her, the production process required "seven weeks" and involved producing "countless iterations" which were then shaped in post-production "just as we would on any standard production".
"This was not an AI trick," Bridge asserted. "The result was a finished piece."
Divisive Public Reception
While the Dutch McDonald's ad was mostly panned, the reception for other AI-generated holiday ads has been divisive.
For instance, a recent AI-created Christmas spot from another major brand according to analysis achieved a 61% "favorable response" from viewers.
However, other businesses have likewise received backlash for using AI in advertising. Italian brand Valentino, for example, was lambasted for ads that some described as "low-effort" and "uncanny".
The incident highlights the evolving debate within the advertising and production industries about the balance between AI efficiency and human craftsmanship.
