One Piece Concludes a 27-Year Tradition in 2026

It's the end of a long-standing era for long-running series, with Toei Animation revealing a revised release plan for One Piece, which has run continuously for over a quarter-century and included numerous non-canon storylines. Commencing in the new year, once the Egghead Island arc concludes, the anime will take a quarterly hiatus until spring, when the next major arc begins.

New Release Strategy

From now on, One Piece will release a pair of cours every year for a maximum of 26 episodes. The studio states this will help the anime to “dive even deeper into the core of the ONE PIECE world — incorporating more content, rhythm, and pacing of the original manga.” However, Toei end by promising “exciting surprises” during the hiatus period, which suggests more related projects, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, set to premiere in the interim.

Learning from Past Breaks

The One Piece anime had a half-year pause that began in October 2024 and ended in early 2025. The intermission was for the production team to enhance the animation quality and let the manga to get further ahead to avoid a rushed adaptation and lengthy recap episodes. The show greatly benefited from this respite, and it has been able to deliver viewers with countless action sequences, superior graphics, and reduced non-canon content than ever before.

Adopting Modern Trends

While some recap episodes appeared during the recent run, the positive effects of this new production schedule greatly outweigh the occasional interruption in the story. This also gives the original work, which is presently in the thick of the Elbaph arc, to extend its lead on the adaptation. Per the news, this may result in a single installment of the anime adapting one chapter, with others instead handling more material or additional to compensate for time.

It's the end of a generation for Japanese animation, as the epic saga is the final major title to abandon the old-school way of creation, which prioritized being on air for most of the calendar. It's the reason why iconic series such as Bleach, and of course One Piece have so many side stories, and the quality of the animation can vary widely between installments and the next. Today, series creation is organized in cours, with one or two at most releasing each year, enabling better quality and greater accuracy to the original work.
